ChatGPT for Word: A Complete Guide to the Sidebar AI Writing Assistant

OpenAI has plugged ChatGPT into the Microsoft Word sidebar, available on all plans including free: it reads your whole document as context, drafts with one click, summarizes documents, rewrites selections, and proofreads. This guide covers setup and 4 practical workflows.

In September, OpenAI officially opened up ChatGPT for Microsoft Word: a ChatGPT sidebar appeared on the right side of Word, available on all plans — including free. Here’s what it does and how to use it.

What It Does

The sidebar add-in reads your currently open document as context. Four core uses:

  1. Draft generation: give it a topic or outline and let it write a first draft.
  2. Document summary: distill long documents into key points with one click.
  3. Rewrite selections: select a passage and have it rephrase, adjust tone, tighten, or expand.
  4. Proofreading: check for typos, grammar issues, and awkward phrasing.

Getting Started

  1. Find and enable the ChatGPT sidebar add-in in Word (via your Word version’s app store / add-ins entry).
  2. Sign in once with your ChatGPT account.
  3. Open a document — the sidebar automatically uses it as context, so every question you ask relates to that document by default.

4 Practical Workflows

1. Outline First, Then Expand Long Pieces

Have it draft an outline from your topic, adjust the structure yourself, then expand section by section. Far more reliable than “write the whole thing at once.”

2. Meeting Notes Done in 5 Minutes

Paste meeting notes into the document and have it summarize by “decisions / action items / owners” — done in one pass.

3. Rewrite Without Harming the Original

Select the passage to rework, generate 2–3 rewrite variants, then pick. Note: for critical wording (contracts, official documents), always have a human review.

4. Proofread Before Submitting

Run a full proofread, focusing on the grammar and collocation issues it flags — it catches typos reliably.

Two Reminders

  • Free plans work too, but exact quotas follow OpenAI’s official documentation.
  • From September 17 to 30, ChatGPT Business and Enterprise customers could also try the GPT-6.6 Sol model free, switchable right in the sidebar.

There are many AI writing tools, but few live directly inside Word. If you work with documents daily, this sidebar is worth installing and trying for a week.
