View Any Website 10 Years Ago

The Wayback Machine lets you browse archived snapshots of any website. First-capture dates reveal real launch times — a practical tool for competitor research.

The Wayback Machine (web.archive.org) is the internet’s free time machine. Enter any domain and it will show you archived snapshots of that site, stretching back decades. For competitor research it is one of the most practical tools around: instead of guessing how a rival grew, you can watch its homepage, product pages, and pricing change year by year, snapshot by snapshot.

(Figures and case details in this article are as mentioned in the original source and have not been independently verified.)

1. How to browse history, step by step

Start by entering a domain on web.archive.org. You’ll land on a calendar view covering every year the site was captured. Pick a year, then pick a day that has captures marked. A single day often has several captures — the larger and darker the circle, the more snapshots that moment produced. Open the capture in a new tab so you can keep the timeline handy, and use the ▶️ button to jump to the next day’s snapshot. Inside a snapshot, inner pages and outbound links usually work, so you can walk through the site as it looked on that day. Pages that were later deleted sometimes survive in the archive and can still be recovered this way.

2. First-capture date ≈ launch date

The single most useful trick is dating a site. A domain’s registration date is not its launch date — many domains sit parked for years. The Wayback Machine’s first capture is a far better proxy for when the site actually went live. Take a food site: its domain was registered back in 2010, but the first real captures only start in 2018 — the site only went live then, and it now pulls roughly 7.2M monthly visits per the original. Another case: a studies domain registered in 2008, but the archive shows nothing live until May 2020.

3. The duoshuo.com case

A classic walkthrough is duoshuo.com. Its first capture dates to 2011-11-18, when it was a simple WordPress blog whose first post was dated November 16. Shortly after, the site rolled out version 0.33, and within a month the product was submitted to the WordPress plugin directory. By the end of November 2011, more than 300 sites had integrated it, per the original. Every step of that launch story is visible in the archive.

4. Reverse-engineering growth timelines

Because snapshots are timestamped, you can reconstruct how fast a competitor grew. A Russian AI photo app is a good example: its domain was registered on July 17, the first archive capture appeared on July 22, and roughly 20 days later it was already doing about 4.8M monthly visits, per the original. Watching the snapshot cadence accelerate over those weeks tells you when the growth spike actually hit.

5. The archive API for bulk domain dating

The calendar view is fine for one site, but for a list of domains you want the archive’s availability API. Query it programmatically with a domain and a timestamp, and it returns the closest capture — letting you date hundreds of domains at scale. This is handy for lead generation, prospecting, and checking whether a whole batch of competitor domains are really as old as they claim.

Wayback Machine(web.archive.org)

3. duoshuo.com 案例

一个经典的复盘案例是 duoshuo.com。
